Importance of aesthetics in e-learning

One of the biggest concerns in the development of eLearning is the quality of the content; however, to make a truly successful learning course, it is not enough to have relevant and up-to-date information, there are also other essential and technical elements that we must consider to ensure that we will achieve the expected results.

Has it ever happened to you that when choosing between one product or another, it is easier to lean towards the one with a better appearance? This is normal, as we tend to trust or not trust something based on our first impressions. Studies of brain activity confirm that aesthetic impressions are formed within 300ms to 600ms, and these judgments formed so quickly affect the way we interact with the final product.

The same happens in eLearning, the aesthetics of the course has become a determining factor when choosing between one course or another.

Due to the importance that aesthetics has gained, online courses must comply with certain guidelines or design principles that allow the end user to have a positive experience and be open to receiving knowledge.

Next, we share some of these principles and how they are seen in practical application:

Balance

Naturally and unconsciously, people seek balance in their surroundings, which is why when designing a course it is very important to achieve this balance with all the visual elements, thus guiding the user's gaze where we want it, without overwhelming them.

Contrast

The contrast helps us organize the information, as it allows us to highlight the key elements. This can be achieved by using different colors, different fonts, text thickness, or playing with the scale of the elements.

Hierarchy

The objective of hierarchy is to classify each element of the design according to its importance, thereby creating a visual path that allows the user to analyze the content in a fluid manner and facilitates their understanding. Hierarchy can be established through the size, color, shape, or orientation of the elements, among others.

Repetition

Repetition allows us to achieve a unified design so that the user can become familiar with the learning environment and not worry about navigating through the course. This is accomplished by creating a style guide that maintains uniformity in the sizes and fonts of titles and texts, margins, placement of images, appearance and placement of interface buttons, such as save, back, etc., as well as any other element that appears consistently across multiple pages.

As eLearning professionals in MexicoDC, we understand the importance of presenting educational content not only in a structured and dynamic manner but also in a visually appealing way to effectively convey the message.
